The day you met, the silly chat, the little things he did that made you laugh, and those crazy meaningless things. You realize how you miss them all and how it has made a void in you. It makes you emotinal and crave for his presence. I can’t recollect any other song that expresses this feeling so beautifully. My all time favorite actor is Amol Palekar, he makes his character so real. His acting so effortless and probably that’s the reason you don’t realize that he is such a good actor.

Some songs are so melodious that you almost flow with it and surely, this is on top. It was a little unconventional song and was to be deleted from the movie but for the way Rafi sung it , you can feel the love, the pain – the master at work. An entire love story sung in a song, and what a lovely description of love. It’s so good to your ears. Isko kehtein hain mithaaas!! The sitution is something like this: Meena Kumari is a dancer and the man she loves, rejects her and becomes a monk. This is the song where she tells the monk that living away from the world and trying to find God is not great, the important thing is be in this mess and find Him. Just the first line says it all: “Sansar se bhage phirte ho, bhagwan ko kya tum paoge”. And I love this line: “Apman racheta ka hoga, rachna ko agar thukraoge”…So true! Some say that she is justifying her way of living…maybe, but if you’ve to justify yourself – this is the way to do it. Hats off to Sahir Ludhianvi.

The song is so full of love between two people and that every line is love and only love for each other. Sadly, after this song they separate. You need to watch this film to see what intense acting is all about. The way Shabana expresses her pain, her sorrow – it’s simply brilliant. Sadly, I couldn’t find the real video online.

I’m a lyrics man, but had a tough time following even a single word in the first line-
“Zihaal-e-maskeen mukon ba-ranjish, Bahaal-e-hijra bechara dil hai” But this is one song in Mithun’s time that I like, and if you’re also wondering – this is the meaning “Is gareeb ko itni ranjish (enimty) se na dekho, Ye dil judai ke gamon se abhi taaza hai” There’s another similar song by Amir Khusro, sung by Ghulam Ali and also by Chhaya Ganguly. The most interesting thing about that song is that each line is in persian and then followed by a line in Brij bhasha. “Zihaal-e-miskeen mukon taghaful, Doraaye nainaan banaye batyaan Ke taab-e-hijraah nadarum-e-jaan, Na laihyo kaahe lagaye chatyaan ”
